I ran into a dilemma today for the first time since becoming a work at home mom: I woke up sick.
If I had older children that were already in school, this wouldn´t be a problem.
If I still worked out of the home, it wouldn´t be a problem either. I would call in sick, take my daughter to daycare, return home, and sleep off the illness.
But neither of these two situations applies to me. My daughter is still at home and has not yet started preschool.
So, feeling run down and completely tired, I crawled out of bed, took care of my daughter´s breakfast, ate my own bowl of oatmeal, and then considered how I might work, care for my daughter, and rest enough to get well quickly. Answers are not coming to my foggy mind. I know that when she goes down for her nap, which is generally my work time in the afternoon, I, too, will want to rest.
So my question to you work at home moms (and dads) with young children is this: What do you do when you are sick? Do you have alternative care for your children so that you can take a "sick day?´ Do you have family nearby that can help? Or do you plow through, do what you can stand to do, and then drop at the end of the day, like I am about to do?
Now I´m off to pop a few throat lozenges and play some games with my daughter that don´t involve a lot of running, jumping, dancing, or yelling.
Work will just have to wait . . .
