Smart Planet has Fiji Water’s environmental plan under the microscope. On one hand, the company contributes to the 1.5 million pounds of plastic used every year for bottled water, they ship their product across the globe to their British Market, and they ship out of a country where the residents suffer under a lack of clean water.
On the other hand, Fiji is using Pet plastic which uses less energy to produce, they’ve reduced their packaging by 7%, they’ve had their carbon footprint calculations verified by ICF International, and they’re offsetting their carbon usage by partnering with Conservation International to restore endangered forests in Fiji.
The columnist puts the case to the reader to decide, but being under that microscope can’t be a comfortable position for Fiji Water, and I doubt that they’re going to be the last company in the petri dish. Businesses are going to have to be ready for it
