If you are a regular Management Craft reader, you know I am no fan of traditional staff meetings. I am a proponent of focus sessions – collaborative conversations that enable a group of people to go an inch wide and mile deep on one topic.
Great business conversation that makes a difference.
In Focus Like a Laser Beam, I wrote an entire chapter on the topic called, Turn Meetings into Focus Sessions.
I just added a free download from that chapter to my website with the Focus Session Worksheet ( a great little meeting planning tool, if I do say so myself). Grab yours today and give it a try. The handout is pretty self-explanatory.
In addition to the brief excerpt and the worksheet, this download offers several great provocative and evocative questions. Remember Provo-Evo? Print this page out and take it to your next meeting.
Hey – why not try this instead of your next staff meeting? Report back and let me know how it goes!
I am working on a management course for a regional company and it s HEAVY on the skills needed to create great dialogue. I am more convinced than ever that this is a core or foundation skill that is needed by managers.
Here’s my current TOP FIVE list:
- What is excellence?
- Selecting team members and building a winning team
- Creating great dialogue
- Creating an environment where people can and desire to do their best work
These all serve results. These all serve focus. There are other great courses, but I would put these on top. After this series, I would put some business acumen stuff, analysis, project and program management, etc…
Interestingly, many management training programs ignore these five topics. Either I am WAY off base or our much of Corporate America is not training on the right stuff!
