When you register a new domain for your home business, you have several choices as far as top level domain. By “top level domain”, I’m talking about the letters to the right of the rightmost “dot”. For example in allbusiness.com .. the ‘top level domain’ is com.
Most people starting up a web-based business will try to choose the com top level domain. What you will find however, is that most of the good ones are taken. If the name you want is taken, you can try one of the alternate top level domains: biz or ws. biz is a top level domain for businesses and ws means WebSite.
So that would give you two potential alternate options for registering a domain if the name you want and all forms of it are taken in com.
The top level domains are all equal in the eyes of the search engines, so there is no apparent technical advantage to having a com top level domain. The primary advantage to having com in your domain is recognition. com has become the de facto standard for businesses on the web.
The following two domain names have the same name left of the top level domain, but are different because they have different top level domains:
Because of the widespread usage and acceptance of com, customers of ‘coolpatiofurniture.biz’ may remember the site as ‘coolpatiofurniture.com’ and the latter may get a little free traffic from its competitor. That is one of the biggest drawbacks of alternate top level domains. If you can live with that however, you might check the biz and ws versions of the domain name you want if you’re having trouble getting the com version.
