A lot of people want to start a home based business while employed. In most cases this means starting a home based business on a part time basis while working a full time job. How can you best accomplish this dual role?
I call it a ‘dual role’ with good reason. A job and a home business are two different mindsets. On one hand, you have a job – which you probably don’t like – where someone tells you what to do and you may have few chances to be creative. A home based business on the other hand, requires that you be your own boss, make all your own decisions, and be plenty creative.
The single biggest issue with this duality is time. You most likely will not be able to work your home business while at your job so that leaves your time off to attend to the home based business. Using the time off from a full time job will require a lot of discipline on your part.
Start by deciding how many hours per week you can put into your home based business. Commit those hours to a written schedule and stick to it. This means minimizing the times where you are likely to be distracted and interrupted. This usually also means giving something up – like television shows or favorite games. Building a home business in a part time window will require some sacrifices and they may be painful to make.
But keep your eyes on the big prize. That time when you have enough money coming in from your home business to quit your job (or cut back the hours on your job if that option is available to you). Above all stay focused and don’t waste time during your part time commitment; make every minute count!
