If you use your computer in your home based business (and who doesn’t?), then you should know the importance of file backups. Backing up your documents and important files will ensure that you can get them back should something happen with your computer. And usually something will happen at some point; like a hard drive failure.
Online backup services have come up lately and you have plenty of choices to back up your files to via the internet. Generally they all work via the same methods. Usually you do one master backup – the first one which includes all the files you choose to back up. Subsequent backups only back up the files and documents you change. Here are some tips for managing an online backup service.
File Locations – In online backup systems, you generally choose the files and folders you want backed up. Make sure you are familiar with your files and where they are saved so that they all get backed up.
Program Files – Generally it’s not possible to back up your installed programs. This is because programs have lots of dependencies such as registry entries and external library files. Therefore, in the event of a failure, you will probably have to reinstall your programs. Make sure you have everything you need to do that such as program keys and original installer files. Get these installer files backed up in your online system and you can reinstall your programs without problems.
Program Defaults – Sometimes program defaults are not what you would expect. For example, some versions of QuickBooks save your company file to the QuickBooks program directory (unless you specify otherwise). So make sure you know where you programs are saving your data files and be sure those locations are specified in your online backup setup.
Test! – A backup is not much good unless you can restore from it. Once you have established your online backup system, test restoring some less important files. This will ensure that when the time comes, you will know how to restore your files and won’t be caught in a panic.
Online backup systems can be an effective and efficient way to safeguard your important files. Make sure you know what’s getting backed up and how to restore the files if you need to.
