Small Business Q&A
I would just like to know if anyone out there has started a bussiness with Government grant money and how do I go about finding this money without paying a fee to find out about it? I would like to open up a coffee house and have singing and guitar playing at night. Has anyone been successful at this and please tell me how you got started.
There is no such thing as a small business grant from the federal government. The Small Business Administration doesn’t even loan money to companies. That is done by banks and other organizations. They do back small business loans by setting guidelines and backing loans to eliminate some of the risk to the lender. Occasionally there are grants available from the SBIR (SBA Office of Technology), but those are normally for “super” tech type projects.
Here’s the bottom line. The SBA does not give away money to start or grow businesses. But there are a lot of options for you. The best place for you to start educating yourself about the financing side is at the SBA Website.
The next thing you should do is pay a visit to the general part of the (Small Business Administration (SBA) Web Site). There are tons of articles and FAQs there that will help you with your questions. They also offer an online consulting Q&A service.
There is probably a Small Business Development Center (SBDC) close to you. Look them up in the yellow pages and pay them a visit. The services are extremely low cost (or free) and they could guide you through the process.
Also take a few minutes to check out the Service Corp of Retired Executives (SCORE) web site. They are also associated with the SBA and can be helpful to you. There should be either an SBDC or SCORE office in your area. Good luck!
