In Wednesday’s New York Times, Columbia University physician Peter Salgo wrote an op-ed page article calling for a “patient-driven healthcare” revolution. He premise: the only way to regain a sense of the art of medicine and caring is for patients to take control, to push back against the Wall Streetization of healthcare. Healthcare is not a business – we can operate in a business-like manner, but let’s try to keep focused on why we’re here, and why so many come into the field. Whether physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and even administrators, we want to help care for patients.
