I know I have written about this before, and about how I love Dale Carnegie’s advice to quickly and energetically admit our mistakes. Today I was able to see the power of this advice (not the first time!). I made a potentially big mistake – I had vendors coming and going at the wrong time and it was because I communicated a date incorrectly. The bottom line was that I needed about 6 people to agree to change some plans. A few of them had to get agreement from others. It all needed to happen and get confrimed in 90 minutes or less.
I started off by saying, I messed up, I’m in a pickle, and I need your help. I was nice, hopeful, and VERY appreciative of their efforts to accomodate my needs. I offered consessions if needed (they weren’t). Everyone worked and moved heaven and earth to make all the changes.
Thank you Mr. Carnegie. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am sure that if came across as the stressed out b#$@& that was raging inside, I would not have had as good an outcome. If I had played tough and demanded change, it would have gone sour.
Admitting mistakes quickly and energetically has NEVER failed me.
