Apparently today is Blog Action Day 2008. Nobody tells me anything.
Well, my blog action for today is going to be linking directly to this lifehacker article. Anyone who reads this blog knows that I read lifehacker on a fairly regular basis. While a lot of what they cover I couldn’t care less about — in fact, I don’t even understand the subject of most of their articles. I am, quite wholeheartedly, something of a technophobe — but now and again they touch on items that pique my interest.
Blogger Jason Fitzpatrick today wrote on the subject of literacy. As a writer, this is an issue that is especially close to my heart, as it is to Mr. Fitzpatric’s. There is no better or more successful way to communicate effectively than to be literate, to embrace one’s own literacy.
In this article, Attack Poverty Through Literacy Mr. Fitzpatric discusses his personal relationship to this cause as well as an important charity that should be considered by anyone wishing to give — either with time or money — to a worthy cause.
Reading Is Fundamental is, as Mr. Fitzpatrick says, is a long-established charity that has “consistently won awards for being extremely efficient with its funding, receiving an A+ rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy and being ranked among the best 100 charities in the country according to Worth magazine.” I urge you to read Mr. Fitzpatrick’s article in full. This is an incredibly important issue and I cannot adequately sum up what he has written. But if today is Blog Action Day, this blogger’s action is to point you to a blog article with the power to make a real difference.
