Thinking about a franchise business? Want to know more about what owning a franchise is like? Owning a franchise gives you a known brand and help with marketing, and it will support you with a source for equipment and supplies. You may not be able to do things exactly your way, and there is a cost, but franchises have a relatively high rate of success.
About.com has a new About Franchising blog by Don Daszkowski, which may answer a lot of your questions.
Some advice from someone (the subject of a chapter in my in-progress book) who bought a franchise four years ago:
- Find a fellow franchisee in the same organization who will let you work in their operation for several weeks or more before you open your own doors. Some franchisees will pay you, but be willing to volunteer there in order to learn and observe.
- Take your time choosing a location. Proximity to where you live isn’t necessarily the best location. Go where you’re likely to get the most customers.
