The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has seen an increase in complaints in recent years, as companies make wider and broader environmental claims. In a move to protect consumers, they are focusing on further defining greenwashing by revising their Green Guides that lay out the standards that allow companies to label themselves green. They are currently holding workshops and hearings to determine the best industry practices to use in their 2009 updates. Two workshops have already been completed, one on carbon offsets and one on green packaging claims, with one more on July 15th, going over green claims in building supplies.
