The discussion surrounded the issue that they could do a Google search and find all the information in Joel Comm’s book just by wading through pages and pages of articles and forum posts on the internet.
Well, I’m here to tell you they are right…and they are wrong.
I have Joel’s book. I bought it shortly after it was published on the recommendation of a trusted colleague. I implemented his suggestions and in the short month and a half those changes have been online, I’ve found much better success with Google’s Adsense service.
But the larger point here is one I see discussed both on and off the internet all the time. And it begs the question…
Just because you can do it yourself, does that mean you should?
And the answer is no. Let’s take Joe’s book as an example. He sells it for $97. Not cheap for an ebook. Now let’s say you decide to “do it yourself” by conducting searches and reading as much as you can find on the internet. It would probably take you a good 10 to 20 hours just wading through the stuff. (And that’s probably a conservative estimate.) So let’s take that a little further and place a value on your time of $50 per hour (which is probably low). At $50 per hour, if it takes you 10 hours to find the necessary nuggets of gold about Adsense on the internet, your real cost is $500. Makes $97 sound cheap doesn’t it?
So anytime you consider “doing it yourself,” make sure you figure up what it’s really going to cost you. You can’t ever get more time. And it may be better spent on other projects for your business.
