I like the idea of going to a small independent designer for help with a project. The independent designer has a lot more creativity to offer than the larger firm and is comfortable working with a smaller budget. They also feel more comfortable working with smaller "sexier" projects like a cool new website as opposed to a corporate newsletter. The rates vary as well. Some designers charge as little as $25.00 per hour and can work on site on an as needed basis. With both, the independent or the graphic design firm, be sure to ask for references, and samples of their work (or portfolio).
A one page letter can be very effective and cost effective. It doesn’t require any graphics and is very text heavy while getting your point across in a concise manner. While I like this manner a great deal, it can be a bit boring, so relying on dazzling copy is a must in order to get the prospects attention.
The E-mail /Fax
This is probably the most cost effective because you only need an e-mail address and some snappy copy in order to get your message across. Be careful however, there are new laws popping up all over restricting the use of bulk or junk e-mail. A lot of internet service providers also have strict policies and penalties for sending unsolicited e-mail to prospects. To be safe, send out a few of these at one time (no more than 20).
Whichever you choose, there are a few things to keep in mind whenever sending a direct mail piece.
*Decide how many pieces you want to send out and to whom.
*Be sure you have a current list of prospects. You may have to do some initial telemarketing to verify info such as name, address, etc.
*Be sure that you have a great looking piece to send out. If you can either buy a computer program that designs a brochure step by step or hire a competent graphic designer to put together everything with your specifications.
* Follow up on any piece of mail that you send out. It makes no sense to spend the time and money on a great piece and not know if it got to the right person. Make sure that the
person received the info, looked at it and has an opinion on what the piece looked like. Is there an interest in the product/service?
