Today I wanted to talk with you about the four business owner myths and how they can hurt your business success. These are the four most costly misconceptions that not only stop many new entrepreneurs from launching their business, but also trap existing business owners playing so much smaller than they COULD if they just knew better.
Before I get into the details, I do want to take a moment and remind you about the 2009 Business Owner Boot Camp this October 2-3-4 in Atlanta. For a very limited time you can still take advantage of “Early Bird Registration” and attend for just $69 per person (versus the normal $297 per person).
This is a brand new, content rich, 3 day training that I will personally be teaching along with three of the Maui Advisors (including a former CEO and a founding team member of Priceline.com Jeff Hoffman!)
Collectively we’ve started, scaled, and sold over $2 billion of businesses and this is your chance to get our help to take your business to the next level.
Some people have asked us, “David, is this going to be one of those sell-a-thon conferences with 10 speakers each selling to us multiple times each day?” The answer is NO it is not. It is going to be content rich session followed by content rich session. Any of you who have been to our live events know that we always deliver GREAT content, and this time it is going to be totally focused on helping business owners make their businesses more successful.
The reason why we have made the price so low is to make these ideas and strategies accessible to the largest number of business owners (new and seasoned pros alike.) We KNOW that when we deliver great value that we’ll be building our relationship and over time many of you will choose to upgrade to more valuable services we offer to business owners like our Level Three Business Consulting Program or even the Big Maui event itself. I’ve always believed in giving value first… it’s been the single best “marketing” tool I’ve ever happened upon. And it’s the reason why so many of you are still clients even after 10+ years of learning from us.
So join us at the Business Owner’s Boot Camp and learn:
? How to create, plan, fund, and launch a new business.
? How to build out the core systems and team to scale your existing business.
? How to create a strategic plan to focus your business on the highest leverage areas to accelerate growth.
? How to successfully “exit” from your business either by selling or moving into a passive role.
? Plus a whole lot more!

Now onto the 4 business owner myths…
Myth #1: “It’s too risky.”
Hang on a second here… owning your own business is too risky? Tell me, is working for a large corporation a safe bet in today’s world? Personally I think that when you master the skill of building a successful business that you are in the safest place of all.
No matter what happens in any one business, when you have mastered this skill (and it is a learnable skill) you can always start another business.
The bottom line is that owning your own business does have risks, but the degree of control you have over your own future, and the success rate for building your dream life is magnitudes better than being trapped working for someone else.
Myth #2: “It will consume your life.”
Yes launching and the early stages of doing a new business are very intense. But when you understand the Level Three business model you see that as you grow your company you not only can, but NEED TO build your business to be less and less dependent on you the owner.
I have a friend that took the last 15 years to build her successful business. Now she takes off over 3 months each year to travel and explore the world and her business still nets her 7-figures. Tell me any job that will do that!
The bottom-line is that you must build a business, not a job. This will be consuming early on, but over time you can transition your business away from needing you on a daily business. This is a magical shift that will give you FREEDOM.
Myth #3: “You’ve got to stay in control.”
NO! Control is a Level Two trap that will wrap the business around YOU and make it more an more dependent on you. At the Business Owner Boot Camp we’re going to show you how to build intelligent controls into your business not to reach for control.
Controls are a Level 3 concept that helps you build a business versus a job.
Control is a Level 2 concept that traps you in your business.
Myth #4: “It takes a lot of money to launch a new business.”
Fact: most new businesses are launched with less than $10,000 of start up capital from the founder.
Fact: You can bootstrap (fund out of sales)… raise private capital… borrow from the SBA (Small Business Administration)… joint venture… etc to launch your business without a lot of personal capital.
I hope that today’s eletter gave you a real spark to keep working to grow your business and take the outside world’s input with a grain of salt.
My best to you,
