Tell an employee, “take a hike,” and they probably think they’re being fired. Suggest a walk and it fits right into wellness initiatives to support a healthy lifestyle. With stress levels high and rising it’s a great time to kick off simple initiatives to get people moving.
A campaign to encourage walking is easy to start. Get a good price on pedometers, have employees pick striding partners and find the route, indoors or out. An eager committee can create maps and recommended directions. Rewards can be simple water bottles, t-shirts, energy bars and gift certificates to sporting goods stores.
Your company can join a wide world of walkers by participating in the Global Corporate Challenge. Teams of seven compete for 125 days logging their steps as they take a virtual tour of the globe. Participants receive an official pedometer, back pack and materials. Each person gets to chart their route, see their progress and even send post cards from an interactive web site.
Don’t dawdle if you want to check this out, the next challenge begins on May 21st. Employees can spend the summer checking out new vistas while they attempt to walk further than competitors on a different continent.
Next thing you know the walkers will be sharing healthy lunch tips and passing up the morning doughnuts.
