Amazon came out with its “Mechanical Turk” service on Friday. The idea of the Turk site is to allow business to tap into unused labor to perform simple tasks (that can’t be done by a computer) for ultra-cheap wages. I guess this type of service could be useful for all kinds of businesses but looking at the wages for the jobs offered there I’m more fearful of this kind of stuff than optimistic about it.
This job, to rewrite Amazon product descriptions seems unbelievable low-paying at $.40 / description. The Turk page now says all tasks for the posting have been completed and I wonder if acceptable work was really submitted. Most people I know can barely write a coherent email, but Amazon can farm out spot on, gramatically and syntactically correct copy writing at $.40 per description?
Maybe I should farm out the writing of this blog and engage in some small scale wage arbitrage via the Mechanical Turk.
