Target, it seems, ought to be releasing its recycling figures for 2007 very soon, but since the popular retailer is — for the time being — only revealing how much it recycled in 2006, that is what we must report. In 2006, Target:
Reused 385 million garment hangers. Of course, hangers break, so Target recycled 2.1 million pounds of plastic and 153,000 pounds of metal from broken hangers. Geez, think of all the waste before they began this program.
Recycled 911.1 million pounds of cardboard. One wonders if, someday, manufacturers will simply cut down on all the packaging.
Recycled 4.3 million pounds of shrink wrap at distribution centers. Ditto the comment above — is all that shrink wrap really necessary?
Recycled 10,400 pounds of rechargeable batteries collected from customers. Nice. Batteries contain hazardous materials, you know. Eeeooo.
Recycled or refurbished 47,600 broken shopping carts.
Makes me want to run out and recycle something.
