This weekend I read an article about summer day camps being a tax write off for parents, and so I wanted to send along some information for those of you who will be working this summer and might want to take advantage of this.
When you send your child to day camp for the summer, it is considered a dependent-care expense. Children must be under the age of 13 in order to qualify and overnight camps are not eligible, as the IRS considers them a luxury rather than a necessity. The size of the benefit depends upon the parent´s income, but depending on your family´s income you can claim up to $3,000 for one child and up to $6,000 for 2 or more.
More information can be found by contacting your tax adviser or reading the IRS publication Child and Dependent Care Expenses (http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=121435,00.html).
