I am a firm believer in the power of a good Spring cleaning. Clutter in, clutter out. A cluttered house leads to a cluttered mind.
This weekend I was reminded of several things:
- How great it feels to clean out junk.
- The state of excess in America.
- How the internet has changed Spring cleaning.
Today, two guys brought a dump truck and filled it with our junk and took it away. Our garage now has lots of room and we are living less cluttered in general. It was hard work to get everything together, but it was worth it. I have several large projects going on and my mind is better able to focus. The time invested will come back to us in very short order.
It is amazing how much stuff we have. It’s embarrassing, really. But I know I am not alone because the hauling company we used is a huge national chain and has their vision set on growing internationally. Picking up our junk is their focus. They train their staff at Junk U. The fact that this business is growing so quickly (like the self-storage business) is a sure sign of our excess and abundance.
The company we used is 1800-GOT-JUNK and they are quite "with it." We booked the junk haul online. Their tag line is "The World’s Largest Junk Removal Service." I can understand these businesses thriving for disaster clean up and such things, but why is it that we have so much junk? They must be doing something right, they were voted as one of the Best Companies to Work For in BC, Canada. Their jobs page leads off with the following questions:
GOT ENERGY? GOT PASSION? GOT LEADERSHIP?
Not what we might expect from a junk removal business. They do one thing and have decided they will endeavor to be the biggest and best. In our case the two guys were nice and efficient, their truck was attractive, and they arrived on time. I gotta give it to them….
And we did give it to them – our junk that is. Or rather we paid dearly for the honor of having them take it. We had a lot of junk and paid $450 to get rid it! The psychic payoff makes this a bargain. I am still flabbergasted that we let the clutter get so large.
1800GOTJUNK.COM gets it that business is happening online, even if you are peddling very old school services.
Our Spring cleaning was complete with an ad in Craigslist to give away a table – which was picked up and repurposed within about two hours.
Are you looking to do some Spring cleaning? Excellent! It’s an important productivity practice and can feel quite therapeutic, too.
Now, if I can figure out how to stop collecting next year’s junk……
This example also reinforces the power of being passionate about whatever your chosen profession. Slinging junk can be compelling and enthralling work!
