Delicious. Del.icio.us. Type it any way you like, it is a
spectacular service. Social bookmarking can have value in online marketing.
I’m extremely conscious, or try to be, of how much time it
can take to build an online marketing effort and presence. Because it is part
of my business to do both, I have to remind myself that not every, in fact
most, business owners have little time to manage online efforts. It is
challenging to keep up with all this, I know, and I strive to share ideas and
tips you can implement without a lot of pain.
Social Bookmarks: Who Cares? If your site is worth it for other people to bookmark, you
will see additional traffic eventually from others. A search engine ranks your
site by external links pointing to it, but social media options work based on
user input (as in user-generated media). Therefore, if a lot of people start
bookmarking your site on Delicious, for example, that is a huge vote of
confidence and one you can keep leveraging by encouraging your customers to do
the same (vote for you by bookmarking your site).
Just as you can benefit from getting “tagged” by Delicious
(or other sites like Technorati or Furl or Simpy – I realize these are not the same
types of services) as a popular bookmark or tag, you can search your
competitors as a tag and see if they are being bookmarked, too. You can also
search key terms that you might be researching.
But my favorite way for using tags is this: Let’s say that
you have an important national conference that you wanted to attend, but could
not. Bloggers, bookmarkers, savvy writers will use a distinct tag to mark content
For example, Structure 2008 (on cloud computing) used the tag
“structure 08” and everyone who blogged about it, used that on Technorati. Others
used it at Delicious. But if you didn’t get the chance to attend, you might not
realize that others were tagging their content with this acronym and might not find
useful commentary or insights related to it.
It could be any sort of gathering or group or meeting that people
decide to use a specific term as a tag within the blog platform or social bookmarking
