The other night my husband and our neighbor´s husband took the kids to the park. When he returned, my husband told me that the neighbor´s husband had asked him what his hobbies were, and when my husband stopped to think about it, the man went on to list all of the hobbies that he has: fishing, boating, etc . . .
My husband and I started talking about this later that night. We tried to think of hobbies that we have, and that we´ve kept since becoming parents, but we couldn´t think of any. Our next door neighbors have hobbies. He plays football, she plays soccer, and they are always on the go.
We used to have hobbies. I was interested in photography and my husband played golf. Now, though, we have a hard enough time finding the time to squeeze in work, home life, and all of the other things that we have to get done in a day. I can´t recall the last time I took out my camera, or the last time my husband played a round of golf.
So how are you doing with your hobbies? Do you pursue them on a regular basis? Without children? Outside of work? On your own? Or have they fallen to the wayside as well?
I know that a lot of people replace hobbies once they have children. For instance, at one time I kayaked. I haven´t used my boat in more than three years and it is creating a patch of dead grass on the back lawn now, but lately I´ve been scrapbooking and baking bread. Two things I can do inside the house while the kids nap or play with their toys, and something I can do in my house that helps me relax and get away.
So that got me to wondering if I am the only one that has trouble pursuing hobbies and finding down time, or if the rest of you working mommies are running into the same problem. As you go through the day, consider your hobbies-are you still involved with them, particularly ones that are located outside of your house? If not, is there a way you can get back into them, even a little at a time? Drop me a line if you do keep up with your outside hobbies and let me know how you go about scheduling time to do so. I’ll include your tips in a future post.
