To get a taste of many different cultures in the one place, Singapore´s diverse nationalities are all in the one place, letting you take the any of the many city bus tours into compact mini-countries such as China, India and Malaysia.
One great tour with a difference is the Wacky Duck Tours (www.ducktours.com.sg), a fabulous drive around the city then a paddle up the river using an amphibious vehicle. The same folks have also recently launched an unforgettable way to get an overview of the city and despite my fear of heights, I can proudly say I rose above it all in a giant helium balloon.
Other things to enjoy include the colourful Jurong Bird Park and the night safari at the Singapore Zoo. There are temples, museums, gardens and of course, the outlying islands. My favourite is Bin Tan Island (www.bintanlagoon.com) which is actually in Indonesia (which means it is even cheaper for Westerner´s then Singapore is) but only a one hour ferry ride from Singapore. Has the best golf in Asia that I have experienced so far, a fabulous resort where the spa treatments melted me into a seriously relaxed visitor and tours of villages and even a great cruise to search for fireflies along a river. I had not had so much fun for years.
