If you have a home based business, the New Year is the time to make goals and that’s coming up really soon. Here are some tips for setting those New Year goals for your home business.
Write them down – Rather than having goals floating around in your head, write them down. There is something about the act of writing goals down that solidifies them better. And of course, writing them down forces you to articulate them in words rather than free floating thoughts.
Make your goals realistic – There is nothing wrong with setting your sights high. But setting them too high to realistically achieve in the period of a year may cause them to be unattainable and can then be a source of frustration.
Break up the goals – If you do have goals that seem unreachable, try breaking them down into smaller goals that can help step you up to your larger goal. For example, maybe you have a goal to make 100K in your business this coming year. Depending on where you are coming from that may be tall order so set the goal to a more realistic amount based on your current position.
Set a reward for yourself – Along with setting goals for your business, what about setting a reward for yourself if you reach the goals? This is something I recently incorporated into my goal setting and found that it works quite well. I have also heard of people setting punishments for themselves for not reaching the goal (like wearing a sign at a trade show saying “I didn’t make my goal”). But I am not a big fan of punishment because that creates a situation where you feel like you “have to” rather than “want to” reach them.
What about you? Do you have any business goal setting tips to add?
