Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle has accepted the position as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, according to news sources today. The Huffington Post rounds out the picture, arguing that the reason Daschle was appointed was to get legislation passed by Congress. As a former Senate Majority Leader, Daschle has the contacts, understands the process can had the skills to move along legislation, something that Hillary Clinton did not possess in 1994.
Well, at least we’re off the fantasy that the free market fixes all. The final plan will, undoubtedly, include some aspects of other plans that have been floated over the years. Congressional leaders have been talking about tackling and expanding the SCHIP program, something which Bush vetoed. Yes, we are inching our way to universal health coverage.
