You’ve had great search engine rankings on the major search engines and one day you notice you’re gone. Or your coveted #1 and top ten rankings have dropped to page 45. What do you do?
Search engines make periodic updates that cause rankings to dramatically fluctuate for days or even weeks. In fact, there are major updates occurring right now with Yahoo and Google.
The term used to described these fluctuations on Google is “Google Dance”. Some updates are so extensive, SEO professionals give them names like hurricanes. The current Google update has been named “Bourbon” in honor of the Webmaster World confernence coming up in New Orleans.
Yahoo has started to offer “weather reports” on it’s blog to let webmasters know a major update is coming.
In most cases, ranking results settle down within a few days or weeks. Until then, it’s fruitless to make any major changes to your web site optimization. The best thing to do is wait until the update is over.
