At a recent meeting, I was reminded of a great lesson taught by most professional improv groups – the power of saying “YES, and” instead of the much more common, “NO, but” or even “YES, but”.
In improv, this is one fundamental in the cornerstone of success on stage. One performer starts with a concept, and the next receives that concept happily, willingly, with a “YES, and” attitude. Just think if in the middle of improvisation, either musically or on stage performance, if a participant rejected what was happening, it could be a disaster.
Then why do we do it to our colleagues, customers, and even prospective customers on a regular basis? One of the reasons I developed a session called, “Revenue Brainstorm Forum” is just for this purpose – to allow all possible ideas, and not to be able to reject something as quickly as we all can do.
I’m thinking about how we shoot down potential new ideas within a split second, and even worse, how we walk around demonstrating to employees, alliance partners, and even customers how closed minded we are because something doesn’t fit into our framework of current thought.
Think about it…… say “YES, and….” five or six times today or a dozen times through the week. Please note what happens in our comments.
