Did you ever see the Simpsons episode where Homer is going to make his fortune in restaurant grease? I couldn’t help but think Matt Groening must be chuckling somewhere when I read about Blue Sky Biofuels’ fight with San Francisco. Blue Sky had a good little business going, collecting grease from local restaurants and turning it into biofuels, then the city decided to get in on the game. Where Blue Sky used to charge a fee for pick-up, SFGreaseCycle collects it for free, and then sells it to recyclers. Not only does that force Blue Sky to lose its revenues from collections, they’re now forced to compete with the city for its supply; a supply that San Francisco is selling to companies as far away as Nevada.
