If you are a pleasant, upbeat, enthusiastic person, you may not even be aware that many others out there are not wired in the same manner. Just like after you work in a bakery for a while and take for granted those wonderful smells….. so can the positive enthusiastic mentor forget what really makes him or her stand out in a business.
The other night I had to attend a mandatory meeting in preparation for a nearly multi-million dollar fundraiser in my town. I am a volunteer, and this was my first meeting with this organization, although they have been around for years, and I have volunteered at charity events for many years. Nonetheless, I didn’t know what to expect. What I found was that it seemed very clique-ey, like high school – with inside jokes and some amount of cynical comments. My thought as a first time volunteer (along with about 10-15% of the crowd) was that this was not a good first impression. The worst part was several of the speakers’ LACK of ENTHUSIASM!!! Here I can volunteer most anywhere in town, and I end up with a clique-y group of semi-burned out volunteers. The event hasn’t even happened yet!
The experience reminded me of when you might not be feeling 100% but you have new and prospective new customers talking with you and asking you questions.
If you are at all tired or run down, make a conscious effort to CRANK IT UP a bit!! Drained energy is NOT attractive. I also experienced a real lack of enthusiasm and care at a recent visit to my local SBUX store. Actually, I went to the same store four days apart and got low energy, apathy and indifference each time. Hard to believe!
It costs nothing to crank up your volume, sit up straighter, smile, and listen to the other person. And it could earn you more money than you can ever imagine. Try it out and post your thoughts. If this has been your trademark for sometime, let us all know how it is working.
