One the concerns many have has to do with retirement. There are a number of retirement calculators out there, but many of them are rather simplistic, merely allowing you to put in income and spending, and your asset allocation, and then get an idea, depending on where you are right now, of whether you are likely to be on track for retirement. It even helps you by allowing you to include the value of your home.
If you want a little more detail as you hash out your retirement capability, you might try the retirement calculator at VestingPoint.com. There is a free demo that you can use for seven days, and then you have the option of paying a subscription fee of $18 per year.
I like that this calculator allows you to be quite detailed in your financial situation. With my real information, I discovered that my retirement outlook is good. Then I tinkered around to see what could make my retirement situation bad. I found that spending more, lower Social Security benefits (which could become a reality) and failing to save could result in problems for me with regard to retirement.
If you are interested in keeping up with how you are doing, and seeing how different changes can help you — or hurt you — with retirement (including an option to adjust for inflation), this calculator might be helpful. I would like to see a little more specific analysis, though, and some tips as to what to change. The calculator runs against a range of scenarios, and tells you how many you are likely to be successful in, but the demo version doesn’t offer specifics on what those scenarios are.
However, if you are actively trying to put together a retirement plan, and track your progress, this calculator might be worth the $18 a year in order to periodically enter your information and make sure you are the right track for retirement.
*Update*: I am informed by the calculator’s creator that he is working on adding functionality in order to increase the usefulness of this calculator. He is working on the ability to produce a PDF plan, as well as working to include an optimization feature. More functionality is forthcoming.
