There are two ways people know about your business.
1) By having already done business with you in the past, or
2) You met them through networking.
When you’re brand new in business, you don’t have many people from #1. And yet I know many new business people who resist #2, networking — not because they think it’s a bad idea. It’s just “uncomfortable” for them. Taking your very first step was uncomfortable for you when you were a toddler, but you wanted to walk badly enough that you took a chance. Want badly enough to make your business succeed? If so, just move past your discomfort and get out and network. It gets easier each time you do it.
Duct Tape Marketing offers tips on networking in One of the Best Ways to Generate Referrals. These are all good insights, and if you know you’ve got to do it, please read the post. I would add one to that list: Attend Meetings Regularly. Joining simply isn’t enough. You have to be there and see the same people repeatedly. And as you do, the faces won’t be intimidating anymore, because you’ll know people there.
