If you have a home-based business running on a shoe-string budget, sometimes it’s tempting to cut back on things. I often see home-based business people who are supposed to be consultants or service providers of some kind with free email accounts! Free email accounts like HotMail, Yahoo!, or even GMail.
Now there’s nothing wrong with free email accounts; I use them myself for various reasons. But if you’re trying to promote yourself as a business, it going to give a much more favorable impression if you have an email address from your own domain. For example, if you’re a pet grooming business, Bill@BillsPetGrooming.com is going to look better on your business card than firstname.lastname@example.org.
These days, most domain registrars like GoDaddy and Network Solutions offer low cost email accounts along with their domain hosting. In some cases, one email account is even included with a domain free of charge.
So get a real email address for your home based business. It will give a much more favorable impression on your business cards, letterhead, invoices, and other correspondence. A free email address can give the impression that you really don’t care enough about your business to get a real email address and can play against you in acquiring new clients and customers. A real email address, on the other hand will look like you really mean business!
