We always hear tales of consumers finding great deals on eBay, but entrepreneurs and business owners in every industry can get great deals on supplies and equipment every day. At last estimate, worldwide business buying on eBay was thought to exceed $2 billion.
Entrepreneurs love eBay because of its one-stop-shopping appeal; from copier paper to computers to fixtures, they can find it all in one place. Small businesses can get great deals, saving business owners hundreds, sometimes thousands, on industrial equipment and hardware.
If you are new to eBay, you probably don’t want your first purchase to be for a big-ticket item. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the process, and try buying inexpensive items to get the hang of it.
Always make sure a seller is legitimate before finalizing the deal. Read the seller’s description and feedback and be wary of new sellers and sellers who don’t respond to questions you ask them. It may be worthwhile to send the seller your phone number so you can discuss the item for sale, especially with higher-ticket items. Find out the seller’s return policy and whether or not they offer any type of product guarantee or warranty.
There are two main types of auctions, with variations within each type. Sellers can opt to set a fixed price for their item and sell it using a feature called “Buy It Now,” which means that you don’t have to go through the auction cycle and beat out other bidders for the item you want. If you are wiling to pay that price, you can buy it on the spot. The other type of auction is traditional, where the highest bidder wins. These auctions can last any number of days, depending on how the seller set the auction period.
For this reason, and because of the fluid nature of the eBay marketplace, finding the best deals requires patience. If you need a specific piece of equipment, hardware, or machinery right away, eBay may not be your best bet. But if you can afford to wait until the perfect deal presents itself, eBay can be a great place to outfit your business.
