There will always be people who will tell you why you shouldn’t start a business, or that you should be in a different business, or that the way you are going about it is all wrong, or… Well, you know what I mean. The negative types can drag you down.
It is really important to discern whether someone is giving you sound advice when you’re off the mark, or if it’s a person who is just routinely negative (or perhaps even envious of your aspirations!) There are negative people you should just try to stay away from and disregard if you can’t avoid them.
Guy Kawasaki wrote a post recently about How Not to Choke. He tells a personal story about a hockey coach who fed some of his students negative stereotypes of themselves as players. Kawasaki talks about how stereotypes affect performance, and specifically how negative stereotypes compromise performance. He urges us to “invoke positive stereotypes”. And there in that section he used that lovely word! Positivity. Consider making Positivity your New Year’s Resolution.
