You need to think about your competition. While planning your own marketing, thinking about your competition, go to the Web and shop for what you’re going to sell. There’s no substitute. You search in order to know what’s out there, what people might be buying now compared to what you’re selling, and of course what search terms they are using, what companies they are now buying from, and what they are paying.
Depending on what business you’re starting, you might also do some real shopping in real stores. Or eating in restaurants, or riding in taxis, or whatever. Sometimes the use of the term “market research” makes us look past the obvious. If you’re going to sell footwear, then you should shop for footwear. If you’re going to sell organic foods, shop for everything related. Maybe you don’t buy everything related to your business, but you see it, price it, touch it, and either know it or know about it.
