Back when I was an intern, one of the first projects I was on was building the holiday gift guide list. To say the least, it was very time intensive. What it entailed was calling up various newspapers and magazines across the country, asking to speak to the editorial assistant, then finding out when the publication’s holiday gift guide was closing, and who the right contact was, and what they were looking for.
I spent one whole week doing this – 7 hours a day. And, I was the third person to work on the project, and it was only for one client. So, for me that was 35 hours of billable work that I could have been working on something different.
As a single practitioner, though, I don’t have the time to build my own Holiday gift list – there’s a better use of my time and client budgets. For the past few years, though, I have been using The Gift List, where Amy takes care of all the grunt work, and it has been an immense time saver and life saver for the Holiday Gift Guides. Now, the whole business of Holiday gift guides is amazing. You start pulling the information in the beginning of summer, if you are a large enough business, you have a Christmas in June (or, to be PC, Holiday in June) event to showcase your new products. Yes, for magazines, you have to start thinking about a white Christmas while, at least for me, it’s 100+ degrees. That always can put you in an interesting mood.
If you pick up your local paper, though, you see how they put together the Holiday gift guide – they are looking for what could be that cool product, or must-have product, or a local product. And, this is not limited to just consumer electronics, but also extends to anything that would be an appropriate gift for the Holiday season. I have pitched and placed jewelry across the nation for an online jeweler, or pitched and placed baked goods, with an online brownie store. If you are a small business, and you have an online store, you need to be thinking about the Holiday gift guides, and, well, you need a service like The Gift List.
Now, I am biased toward The Gift List – I have used it, and it has proven its worth to me by landing articles in publications I would have not likely had found, or thought of, to pitch clients and clients’ products. But, I also knew of a colleague who had been contemplating using The Gift List and I kept bugging her telling her that she needed to get it.
Via an IM interview the other day …
Me: you’re the one that got gift list media, right?
Me: you liking it?
Rosin: yes, it´s fabulous!
Rosin: the list is a great help…as there are some deluxe consumer interest items on there – those who want high end products.
Plus, in talking with Rosin today – after using The Gift List for a week – she’s landed a hit in a top women’s health publication.
For the small business owner that has an online store – or ships product around the country – products like The Gift List are a great resource to find new outlets to pitch products. And, while it is important to pitch the local gift list, it’s also nice to see orders rolling in from around the country, helping take the company to the next level. The Holiday season is the time to do that, and such services are a great resource to get there.
