You’ve started your business, or you’re about to jump off the cliff. You may notice that you’re talking to certain people quite a bit, and talking to others less….or maybe, even avoiding them. What you’ll find right away is that as a new entrepreneur, there are people who definitely help you, whether it’s by giving you new ideas or just giving your spirits a boost. And there are others whose influence isn’t so positive – maybe it’s even destructive! They’re negative about your business prospects, or they point out everything that isn’t flourishing in your business – or they tell you that things might be okay NOW, but just wait until this or that or the other thing happens…..
In some ways, the best thing that you can do for yourself as a fledgling entrepreneur is to surround yourself with the right people. No one has more influence on you than the people in your circle – the inner circle of spouse or partner, family and close friends – and the outer circle of friends that you see and talk with often. A negative person (or more than one) in either of those groups is a bad thing for you, mentally and business-wise. Can you really afford to have to fight that bad energy, day after day?
Now that you’ve made the commitment to build your business, think about the people who help and the ones who hurt you. Get out a piece of paper, and make a list. One on side, write “HELP” and on the side, “HURT.” You know what to do: fill in the paper with the names of people who sustain you, renew you, give you good ideas and positive energy. On the other side…..go the other names.
Now take a look. Can you spend less time – or no time at all – with the people on the HURT side of the page? You can. Even if it’s your mom. Even if it’s your sister. Now is a great time to back off from those negative people. So they’ll talk about you behind your back – so what. More negativity. You’ll never win the what’s-said-about-you-behind-your-back battle anyway, so let it go. Negative people need to spread their negative energy somehow, and if you won’t be the receptacle, they’ll have to pass the negative energy back and forth between them. That’s okay – you have bigger fish to fry. You’ve got a business to grow, and a group of well-wishers to help you get there. Let the negative people have one another to gripe to, because you’re done with all that. The people you need around you on the people who already know you’re a winner – and who will help you remember that, yourself.
