Overcoming Call Reluctance"?¦Part Two
In my workshops I often ask my clients to try an exercise in relaxation and visualization. I recommend the book, Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain. This is my bible (of sorts) because it teaches you how to visualize what you really want from the universe by looking to a higher source for inspiration and guidance. It also teaches you how to relax through virtually any stressful situation. Here´s an exercise I want you to try.
Close your eyes and take three deep breathes. In your mind´s eye picture yourself walking into a room in your home. Imagine that it´s your favorite room.(say to yourself" relax")There is soft music playing(your favorite)and maybe some scented candles, whatever you normally use to put you in a relaxed state. Suddenly the phone rings and it´s someone you adore on the other end .It could be a friend or lover, parent or neighbor, but it´s definitely someone you enjoy talking to (relax). You´re laughing and joking, having a good time. You end the conversation with a promise to talk again soon. You hang up the phone (still relaxed) and walk out of the room closing the door behind you. Now open your eyes. How do you feel? If you said relaxed then you´re half way there. If you practice this technique at the start of your phone calls or a sales call you will start to notice that you will automatically become relaxed. The other thing to keep in mind is that the person on the other line is not going to hurt you, doesn´t know you and if you make a mistake in your presentation, the only person who knows it is you. This won´t happen over night. It takes time for fear and shame to work its undo magic and it will take time for you to quiet those same fears.
