If you haven’t seen the surface of your desk in months, find out what you can do to quickly organize and clear out the chaos.
Need a quick tip to get through a pile of paper? Consider that the end result of this exercise is to create four categories, four distinct piles labeled urgent, priority, important, and garbage.
Grab the pile and begin to go through each item. Put every item that is time sensitive in the pile labeled Urgent. Then, continue to go through the remainder of the pile.
Place all items that are of interest or concern (but which are not incredibly time sensitive or urgent) in the pile labeled Priority.
Now, the remainder of the pile will fall under one of two categories: Important or Garbage. The important items (those matters that you eventually need to address) should be placed in the Important pile. Any items that you will honestly never get to or that are simply not worth the trouble should be tossed in the garbage.
You now have three distinct and categorized files of paper, a strategy for managing these items, and an order of importance in which to maintain them from now on.
Your environment will have a profound effect on your mindset. Therefore, maintain a positive environment in order to foster a positive mindset. If your home or work environment is clean and organized, you will feel organized, calm, productive, and clearheaded. Conversely, if your home or workspace is chaotic and cluttered, you will feel unproductive and disorganized, and therefore also anxious.
Commit one hour every week to creating a clutter-free zone. If you cannot tackle it all at once, focus on one area at a time and build from there. You’ll be amazed at the difference it will make to how you function and how you feel.
