Sometimes you just wonder if people really think through the impact of an issue before implementing it. Clearly, many times, they don’t. That’s what I think happened this week when KFC offered a free two piece grilled chicken meal to Oprah viewers who downloaded a coupon from her web site.
Sure, they restricted the download to a 24 hour window and they also restricted what days the coupon could be used (not on Mother’s Day – mea culpa), but it just wasn’t enough. KFC had to stop the promotion because their stores were overwhelmed and running out of chicken. They are now offering a rain check to folks who submit their coupon via mail. (I would like to share their video, but there is no embed option — another big mistake.) Oy. What a mess. A self made public relations disaster.
And an opportunity for competitor El Pollo Loco. El Pollo Loco is offering to redeem the KFC coupon on Mother’s Day for coupon holders. What a coup for them. A very smart move indeed. Below is the video with all the details. Bon Appetite!
So what’s the moral to this story? Don’t get paralyzed in your analysis, but think through alternate situations when you are planning. It can save you lots of time and money.
