The fallout from the 2008 Holiday season is in the news now. And it shows to be the worst year for retail sales in a long time – down by about 4%. However buried in all that bad news is some good news for online businesses:
Online sales benefited from the bad weather seen in the northern United States within the last two weeks of the season. E-commerce sales ended down 2.3 percent, but rose 1.8 percent in the final two weeks of the holiday season.
If you have home based business, most likely you are online so this should be somewhat encouraging. Whether that be selling on eBay, using a drop ship home business, or something else, I would bet due to the weather issues and perhaps even due to economic issues (cost of going out), more people spent time online this year. One thing to note when selecting your niche products to sell on eBay or online:
This year, the higher the price, the more consumers did without, SpendingPulse said. Sales at specialty electronics and appliance chains such as Best Buy Co Inc fell 26.7 percent, it said.
