Running a successful business may be costing more then just your paper expenses. It’s a new concept and there is much debate as to its total effectiveness, but offsetting your carbon is taking hold as an easy step towards reducing the office environmental footprint.
Now there is an obvious danger that people will contribute to neutralize their carbon emissions by joining a carbon offset scheme and do nothing to change their business procedures.
Carbon offsetting on its own will not solve our current climate crisis. It is simply one tool that market-driven economies relate to and can begin their journey towards zero emissions. It is a strategy that business can use to create and maintain renewable and reduction projects.
When looking at a carbon offset scheme determine:
– What offset projects are being created
– Would the projects have been created anyway (sometimes this is hard to determine). You are not there to fund someone else’s business but to create additional ways of reducing and absorbing carbon
– Will the projects be maintained i.e. if you have 20 trees planted, will they still be there in 20 years time? This may be hard to guarantee however various reassurances can be provided
– How much goes towards admin of the scheme and how much towards the actual projects
The one that I use is myclimate.org (http://myclimate.org/index.php?lang=en) which is well-known and reputable. Let us know which you use or alternatives.
