If you’re thinking about starting a new business, there’s a good review
of basic data plus some good sources of more information in the New
York Times story Small Business 101: How to Get Started. It’s hardly exhaustive, but let’s face it, there’s a lot of information around and this is recent.
I particularly like the recommendation of the Small Business
Development Centers (SBDC). There are about a thousand of these centers
in the U.S., I know many of the SBDC because I usually go to their
annual convention (in Denver next month), and they’re good. They know
small business, they know starting a business, and their fees are
surprisingly low because they’re sponsored in part by federal
government, state government, and local higher education. You can click here for more information on the SBDCs.
