Shoe lovers can rejoice. DSW finally launched its Web site this week, with special attention to zoom in features, 360-degree views and high definition options. Shoe enthusiasts can click to their feet’s content and relax because now they have yet another online store to visit during shoe emergencies.
The Columbus, Ohio-based retailer says the Web site features more than 2,000 styles and 175 brands. And, striving to please, DSW is allowing online customers to return shoes at any of its 270 stores. For a limited time, DSW is offering free shipping to members of its loyalty program, DSW Rewards.
Even in the current sluggish economy, DSW is growing, with plans to open at least 30 stores this year. Those are bold plans, considering that DSW, on May 29, announced net income of $10.3 million on net sales of $366.3 million for the first quarter ended May 3, 2008, compared with net income of $23.7 million on net sales of $357.0 million for the first quarter ended May 5, 2007. Same store sales decreased 5.4 percent for the comparable period vs. a decrease of 3.6 percent last year.
Internet Retailer reports that DSW spent $12 million to produce the new site; perhaps that accounts, at least partially, for the dip in earnings.
I shopped the new site. It works, and it’s packed with a wide variety of really nice shoe choices. I’ll return, no doubt, when I feel a shoe emergency coming on.
