A new group of exercisers has popped up around Los Angeles. I first heard about them when I had my daughter two and a half years ago, but lately I´ve read various articles about the mother and baby fitness classes that are meeting in local parks for exercise and friendship.
These groups walk or jog while pushing the strollers and then stop at various points around the parks in which they meet to work on abdominal muscles, arms, and legs. Some exercises include crunches and lunges. In some cases, the babies and strollers are used for resistance.
The great thing about these classes is that mothers get a chance to get out and exercise without having to find childcare, and they also get a chance to meet other mothers who all have young children as well. As most of us know having a child, whether it is the first or fifth, is a stressful time. Between hormones, no sleep, and adjusted schedules, and trying to juggle work, a newborn and family, it is easy to feel isolated. By joining an exercise class such as this, not only are you getting out and burning off stress but you are also able to meet new friends.
The few classes that I´ve heard of include Stroller Strides (www.strollerstrides.com), Baby Boot Camp (www.babybootcamp.com) and Stroller Fit (www.strollerfit.com). There are others, and I´m sure a search on one of the search engines will help you locate a class in your area. Also, many places now offer water exercise programs for mothers with children. Contact your local gyms and hospitals for more information.
