I always here people giving the negative references to selling – so this week I wanted to post resources and references that show the merits of being a professional seller – what other career can you help people to get what they want, while helping you get what you want, and sometimes even a third party is involved and wins too. You are a change agent. Many people are too passive or non-descript to want to be an agent of change in the lives of others. I say this is where the action and excitement is!
My son has been a professional hockey player for the past five years, and a collegiate athlete before that. Other than being a paid athlete, which many of us cannot do, I think the next most awesome career is in sales or business development, working for a fantastic company with products and services you believe in. Why? Because if you truly believe in what you are representing, then you are bringing a value to your community and the world that otherwise wouldn’t happen. Even web-based services have sales efforts. They are different, but similar in many ways.
The funny thing is that as a business owner, you became a sales person the day you started business. Some of you just didn’t know it, and some of you told everyone how much you don’t like to sell. Many business owners love what it is that they provide, but they never learned how to promote themselves or their product or service.
It is never too late to learn. I recently posted audio on why sales is a great profession – you can hear it here.
Step One – Embrace the great aspects of selling. Do away with your judgement on what you THINK sales is – comparing it to bad used car salesmen and other prejudice.
Step Two – Post comments about people who DO bring a good name to the profession of selling. It will help others.
