MonsterCommerce is one of the leading turnkey shopping cart providers on the web and has long been a favorite of home-based business people (including yours truly). Next to Yahoo! Stores, it is perhaps one of the biggest ecommerce hosting providers that is specifically geared toward selling physical products online. Friday, they announced that the company had been acquired by Network Solutions. Here’s the official press release.
Network Solutions has somewhat of a jaded history. At one time, they had what can only be considered a monopoly on the domain name registry industry. During that time, they gained a rather bad reputation with respect to customer service. They became known as the company with record customer service hold times. That’s been a few years, but my how that kind of reputation sticks around.
In reality, things have changed however. In 2003, Verisign sold Network Solutions to private investors and much work has been done to revive the company and re-establish it with better ecommerce standards. Acquisitions are a strange beast and it’s always hard to tell what will become of the company being acquired or even the company acquiring them. Here is the MonsterCommerce forum thread where you can read the rants and reactions of some of the merchants along with some interjections by the MonsterCommerce CEO.
Two of our sites are hosted there, so we have some vested interest in this news. But you won’t find anything posted by me in that forum; I’ll have to reserve judgment for a later date!
