It seems that there are more than two things in life are certain (and it’s not death and taxes). It’s the continued in-your-face bombardment of messages – from our computers and cell phones, to billboards and signs, to video screens and moving taxis, trucks, and more. It seems that there’s next to nowhere where we’re not bombarded by some messaging for products, services and retailers.
I’ve been fascinated by these vending machines that sell more than just soda or junk food ever since they came on the scene a couple years back. I’ve seen in them in malls and other places, but now they’re popping up in airports too. A pop-up retail store selling goods that a captive audience may be interested in, all with next to no overhead – that’s brilliant.
THE REAL WORLD RETAILING TAKEAWAY
Sometimes it’s just about maximizing space.
The cost of the space and the machine is about all it takes to sell merchandise from a machine. And the fact that you don’t have to lure customers into the store makes it even better. No wonder retailers and product manufacturers are getting into the vending machine game.
Chances are you don’t have the clout to get into the vending machine game because you don’t have the resources. But can you take the vending machine mentality and apply it in your store.
- Merchandise your cash wrap – pack it in and make it interesting. People always have idle time when checking out. Give them something else to buy.
- Create a well-stocked sale area – people are always willing to buy sale merchandise and look through what you have. Keep it neat and well-organized to increase your sales.
- Create a year-round stocking stuffer area – it’s all about discovery – pull together a great selection of interesting products and merchandise them all in one area
Get out there and study, then figure out how to apply it to your business.
