So it’s the day before Christmas, and if you’ve not gotten all your shopping done, fear not. Thanks to downloads, you’re good to go. Here are some recommended apps for your friends and family because there is truly an app for everyone.
For the Book Worm
Amazon.com already has a popular eReader, and now the online bookseller has announced the release of the Kindle for iPhone App that features Amazon’s Whispersync technology, which can be used to save and synchronize a reader’s bookmark across various Kindle devices and platforms. This will let readers dive into a book on a Kindle then pick up where they left on a compatible device, such as an iPhone without losing their place. Users can also purchase and download hundreds of thousands of books from the Kindle Store, read the beginning of books for free before making a purchase, access a library of previously purchased Kindle titles, and choose from six font sizes. The app is also be compatible with children’s books, cookbooks, travel books, text books and graphic novels; all of which can be displayed in full color, and this app will let you add and view notes too. This is a free app available now for download from the Apple App Store.
For the Wannabe Real Estate Mogul
Imagine getting bonus points in a game for visiting real-world locations! That’s the point behind Booyah’s new free MyTown app for the iPhone, which lets users “buy” real places. The game uses GPS location technology, so you earn in-game money, or even a treasure chest for visiting the real world location. It’s the next best thing to waiting for the next real estate bubble!
For Retro Fun
Remember the Slinky, the toy that somehow promised to be “fun for a girl and boy?” Well, now it is available for the iPhone and iPod Touch from the Apple App Store for $0.99. It features the sights and sounds of the original toy, as well as the jingle and full-length commercials of the classic toy. This app provides game-based challenges, but more importantly, is fun for any late Baby Boomer or member of Generation X.
For Animal Lovers
If you can’t adopt an animal this holiday, consider the Rescue Cleaner instead. This app features videos of six dogs, two cats and a ferret that are put to work inside your iPhone and thus “clean” the screen for you! It is a silly app, but it also benefits animal rescue organizations. It is available for $1.99 from the Apple App Store.
For the Movie Buff
The Internet Movie Database, or IMDB, remains one of the largest collections of movies, TV and celebrity information just about anywhere. And now it is available as a free iPhone or iPod Touch app that includes more than a million and a half movie and TV titles, facts on more than 3.2 million celebrities (and not so famous near-celebrities—I’m listed for example), U.S. movie showtimes and U.S. TV listings as well as box office figures, photos and trailers!
For The Gamblers
Are you feeling lucky? If you answered no, then maybe the Good Luck Gamblers app is for you! Lucky Gambling Days 2010 is an app that might just change your luck around, and for just $0.99. It features 365 Days of Gambling Luck forecasts, a journal to keep track of your winnings and gambling notes, and offers tips on lucky colors, numbers and hours of the day or week. Of course, I’d personally say if you don’t bet you can’t lose, but if you’re the gambling type what’s another buck to “give” you that edge!
For the Horror Fan
Christmas is time of cheer and joy, and if that isn’t for you, then might I recommend Paramount Digital Entertainment’s Pet Sematary for the iPhone. This app, which is based on the cult horror film, will let you blast away at zombies and send the walking dead back to where they belong. It is available for download for $0.99 from the Apple App Store.
