In Lake Elmo (MN), Diane Sessing who runs 4 Perfect Pets is running into problems with City Hall. The city has issued a ‘cease and desist’ order against her home-based Pet Business. This is mostly due to a constructed storage building on her property which was never properly granted a permit.
Storing business inventory on the home property is always a tricky balancing act for a home-based business. As a general rule of thumb, if the products require an extra building on the property, it may be time to consider offsite storage or using a fulfillment center. At the very least, any building constructed for storage should be cleared with city code. It sounds like the city is a bit difficult to deal with in this case, but sometimes they just are and you have to keep at them.
